This jam is a wonderful way to transform ripe figs into something truly special.

The natural sweetness of figs and apples combines with the gentle heat of chili and the warm freshness of ginger, while lemon adds brightness and balance.

The result is a versatile condiment that pairs beautifully with cheese, grilled meats, or even a simple slice of toast.

Serving Suggestions

This jam is delightful served with a cheese platter – especially soft cheeses like manouri, goat’s cheese or brie, or strong aged cheeses like graviera, halloumi cheddar and blue cheese.

We can serve this jam on a Cheese platter, together with smoked turkey, grapes, figs, olives, cherry tomatoes, cucumber, nuts, pita chips etc.

It also makes a fantastic glaze for roasted meats or can be stirred into sauces to add depth and a hint of spice.

Spicy Fig, Apple & Chili Jam

Yield: 1 kilo
Prep Time: 30 minutes
Cook Time: 40 minutes
Additional Time: 1 hour
Total Time: 2 hours 10 minutes

Spicy fig jam made with ripe figs, apples, chili and ginger is the perfect balance of sweet and heat. This homemade jam pairs beautifully with cheese, meats and fresh bread, making it a versatile condiment for any table.

Ingredients

  • 1 kilo ripe figs, peeled and chopped
  • 3 medium apples, peeled, cored, and grated
  • 400 grams sugar (adjust depending on sweetness of figs and apples)
  • 3 fresh red chilies, seeds removed, grated or finely chopped (adjust to taste)
  • 2-inch piece fresh ginger, peeled and grated
  • Juice and zest of 1 lemon
  • Pinch of salt
  • 2 tbsp balsamic cream with fig flavour

Instructions

  1. Place the figs with sugar in a wide saucepan.
  2. In a food processor add the apples, chilies and ginger and puree them.
  3. Add them to the figs, together with the pinch of salt, the lemon zest as well as the balsamic vinegar.
  4. Leave the mixture to macerate for about 1 hour, stirring occasionally, until the sugar draws out the juices.
  5. Place the pan over medium heat and stir until the sugar has fully dissolved.
  6. Increase the heat and bring to a gentle boil. Reduce to a steady simmer and cook, stirring often, until the jam thickens (about 30–40 minutes).
Test for doneness by placing a small spoonful of jam on a chilled plate. Run your finger through it - if it wrinkles and leaves a clean line, it’s ready.
  7. Add the lemon juice and mix.
  8. Carefully ladle the hot jam into sterilized jars, seal, and allow to cool completely.
  9. Store in a cool, dark place. Once opened, keep refrigerated.

Notes

Another way to make sure that our jam is ready is the following:
After boiling the jam for 30 minutes, we let it cool completely. If it has not set, we boil it for another ten minutes and then add the lemon juice.
