Croutons are pieces of sautéed or rebaked bread, often cubed and seasoned, that are used to add texture and flavour to soups or salads.
Now that I have an air fryer, they are ready in 5 minutes!
Ingredients needed to make croutons:
- Any kind of stale bread
- Extra virgin olive oil
- Garlic clove or garlic powder (optional)
- Salt & Pepper
- Oregano or other herbs (optional)
Let’s make croutons
If using fresh garlic clove, put all the ingredients (except the bread) n a food processor or mixer and mix.
Brush the bread with the dressing and cut it into 1 cm (½ inch) cubes. (Otherwise you can pound the garlic and mix in the remaining ingredients).
Arrange the bread cubes on a baking sheet in a single layer and place in the oven.
Bake them in a preheated oven at 180o C / 350o F, for about 15 minutes, or until they start to brown. Turn them once and bake them for 5 more minutes. Turn the oven off and let them cool in the oven. That will make them very crispy.
Note: If you like you can make them in a non stick frying pan. You should keep mixing them until they are browned on all sides.
Croutons in the air fryer
Ingredients
- 4 cups day-old bread, cubed
- 2 tablespoons olive oil
- 1 teaspoon garlic powder
- 1 teaspoon oregano
- Salt and black pepper to taste
Cut your leftover bread into cubes. Put it in the air fryer and add all the ingredients. Toss to coat the bread. Roast in the air fryer at 180oC for 5 minutes.
How to make Croutons
Croutons are small pieces of leftover stale bread made by roasting in the oven, toasting, frying or roasting in the air fryer.
